Maintenance and Restoration
Engineering
The second most important job on our railway is making sure that our fleet of steam locomotives are available to operate services as advertised. Most of our locomotives date back to the early 1940’s and have seen service in a wide variety of places before
joining us. In July 2011 our newly built Engine Shed together with its extensive workshop was officially opened. This has provided Peak Rail with the necessary undercover accommodation to ensure that our locomotives are maintained and overhauled to the
required standard. Maintaining steam locomotives doesn’t also require a back ground in engineering expertise, there are always numerous jobs that need regular attention and full training will be given.
If you have specialist skills, such as being a machinist, then there is work available in the well equipped workshop. Otherwise there are routine tasks involved with running locomotives such as changing brake shoes and springs. Training is given for all who want to learn new engineering skills.
Carriage Restoration
This department needs all trades covering the activities involved. Where appropriate the interested volunteer can, for example, learn painting techniques, lining, signwriting etc. It goes without saying that volunteers in this department achieve enormous satisfaction when the fruits of their work can be seen in vehicles returned to their former glory and running in service.
Wagon restoration and maintenance is centred in Rowsley and needs skilled volunteers such as carpenters, metal-workers, machinists, painters and also cleaners and general help.
